On January 10, 2010, the New Year New You event took over
the beautiful Antoine Du Chez Salon at the Belleview Promenade in Greenwood
Village.An evening of health, healing,
beauty and resources was provided to 38 Denver area women who had a rough 2009.The women who walked out the door looked very
different than the women who walked in.Many
were changed by a new hair cut, a relaxing massage, manicures, pedicures, ionic
footbaths, detox/inch loss body wraps, and a variety of healing energy work. Many women participated in laughing yoga
sessions, Pilates sessions, and self-help acupressure lessons.Several women took advantage of resources like a financial
planner, mortgage broker and legal services broker.Great food was donated by local businesses and
many women won additional services and prizes in a raffle.
Susan Trost created the New Year New You event as her
community project in the Landmark Self Expression and Leadership program. She wanted to make a difference in the lives
of women who had a tough year fora
variety of reasons – divorce, job loss, single moms, financial
challenges, cancer, illness, death of a loved one or caring for a sick or
elderly family member.Women tend to put
themselves last and especially do not take care of themselves in a time of
crisis.Susan said “I was amazed how
easy it was to get people to donate their time and services.MK Bolling, owner of the Belleview Antoine Du
Chez, didn’t hesitate to offer her incredible salon and staff. All the other various healers I asked wanted
to participate too.What is really
amazing is that many of these nominated women now want to volunteer for a
future event.”
Through a nomination process, Susan found women who had a
rough 2009 and do not have the time nor the money to take care of themselves. She
wanted to hit a niche of people that are not served by public assistance and
yet cannot afford to nurture themselves right now.Susan also wanted to give these women tools
and resources to help them deal with the stress in their lives. The ultimate goal was for each woman to leave
feeling beautiful, confident, nurtured, valued and empowered. The hope is that this “new woman” can now make
a difference with their family, friends, neighbors and coworkers.
The event was a huge success! One women who had been unemployed for 18
months found a job a few days later and attributes the change to the new
confidence she had after the event.Another
woman said it was the first time she had actually laughed in months after the
death of a family member.Another said
it opened her eyes and transformed her attitude about the future.Another woman is now excited about 2010 after
a very difficult 2009.Yet another
commented how great it was not to worry about anyone else for just a few hours.
